The
Samata Party was formed by the Janata Dal split in early 1994 that yielded the
Janata Dal (G), led by George Fernandes. It adopted the name of Samata Party
in 1996 and tied up with the BJP. The party won six seats in the Lok Sabha in
1996, all from Bihar.
Samata Party was instrumental in creating public opinion against Laloo Prasad
Yadav's government in the state following which he was chargesheeted by the
court. In a recent party conclave, Fernandes took the alliance partner BJP to
task for its stance on sensitive issues like the Uniform Civil Code, Article
370 and Ayodhya Temple
