The AIADMK is a Tamil party which split from the DMK in 1972.
It won control of Tamil Nadu with the Congress support in 1977 and joined the
Morarji Desai government. Subsequently, it entered into an electoral agreement
with the Janata Party in 1980. Its founder ; former film star MG Ramachandran,
died in December 1987, leading to a succession struggle which led to the seat of
Chief Minister going to his wife Janaki. In 1991 as an ally of the Congress, the
AIADMK retained 11 Lok Sabha seats and also ended the two-years of DMK rule by
winning an overall majority in the state and forming the government under Jayalalitha.
The recent history of Tamil
Nadu is irrevocably interwined with the history of AIADMK deeply bonded with the
love, affection and respect of the Tamil race. Dravida
Munnetra Kazhagam(DMK) flourised under Anna's guidance and leadership.
After the sudden demise of Anna, Karunanidhi,an upcoming and ambitious party
leader moved into the position that Anna held with MGR's help. Karunanidhi
allowed power to get into his head .The DMK returned to power in the
elections of 1971 due to MGR's immense popularity with the people.
At the behest of MGR, Jayalalitha enrolled herself as a
member of the AIADMK on June 4th, 1982. Dr. Jayalalitha's formal baptism
into politics came in 1982 at the party's Cuddalore conference, where MGR asked
her the speak on the theme of "greateness of women" .Since then
Dr.Jayalalitha has never looked back. She served as a
faithful bridge between the party cadres and MGR,between the people and
MGR. But her path was not easy. Amidst jealousy at her growing popularity from
quarters both inside and outside the party, against false allegations, intrigue,
insult and physical attack, she ascended the Chief Ministership of Tamil Nadu in
1991.
